The most efficient way to build it would use:

8 tri-corners as shown here (i.e. 3/4" pipe)

1 or 2 sticks of PVC pipe that fits in your tri-corner pieces cut to lengths that accommodate the size of your paintings. Easy to cut with regular or hack saw OR hardware store will cut it for you. Pipe length OPTIONAL across bottom front.

sheers (very cheap at big box department stores) to drape over to soften light

backboard--could be cardboard--I used foam core

lights with moveable necks for easy repositioning--I'm using 5500K compact fluorescent bulbs

No need to buy the PVC primer or glue. I dryfit everything so that it's easy to move OR resize for larger paintings. If possible, set it up on a wide table so that you can move the lights way out on either side (the table my set up on is too small). A tri-pod is essential. Dark passages are still tricky. To up my odds of getting a good photo, I rotate the painting 90 - 180 degrees taking a photo at each position and tilt the painting in various positions to eliminate glare. Interestingly, zooming out and snapping a photo (resulting in less of the painting occupying the picture plane) has been the best bet for some stubborn paintings. Be sure to eliminate light from other sources. Behind me I hang a curtain on a garment rack to block light from windows. I mainly use this setup for smaller paintings to post on the internet and simply use a Canon Coolpix camera.

Painting in a Series - Part 2

Shown here are three more quick studies of the same view shown in the previous post. I am still amazed as I look out upon the view in this painting how different it is at any given moment. I could likely paint hundreds of ten minute studies like these of this same view and still have no two exactly alike. Lighting changes by the minute and weather and seasons alter it all. Painting a series results in greater visual sensitivity and shows the limitless scope of nature's views.

Photography Solution

When the heat wave descended upon Virginia a couple of weeks ago taking photographs outside became a real ordeal. The structure shown here made it much easier to take photographs of my paintings. I made it out of PVC pipes and elbows and draped it with sheer white curtains to soften the light. The compact fluorescent bulbs are in lamps that can easily be respositioned to avoid glare. When I placed my order for an ISBN while finishing up the The Painter's Workbook, I pictured myself writing so many books that I came ridiculously close to ordering 100 ISBNs. This tiny 6" x 6" size is in the tradition of the Daily Painting Movement. Many artists paint a daily painting often of a simple still life subject such as a single pear, a bunch of radishes, or a sandwich. These can be quite engaging. Since painting life-size is my favorite way, I ususally paint larger canvases for the obvious reason that much of nature's bounty does not fit in 36 square inches. Ironically, and I haven't figured out why, the tiny canvases often take as long, often longer, than larger ones. This is yet another of the mysteries of painting.

On My Easel -- Sunflowers & Hazel Pears

I planted a wide variety of sunflowers and they are in full bloom right now. Jayne (hey, that's me!) is now alive and kicking. This new hands-on painting workbook features sequential painting studies that can not help but improve one's paintings. Using a unique approach based on different palettes that slip under glass, fundamental concepts of painting are explained and explored. Numerous full-color completed samples are included through the workbook to simulate the experience of being in a live workshop. Strategies are emphasized for using these concepts when creating a painting. By applying yourself to these studies, there is no way one can not end up with a deeper understanding of painting.

The workbook is coil bound making it a perfect painting companion. Three gourment meals were served daily at which participants in concurrent workshops demonstrated their learning with song, piano, and a play. Scotch tape works, too. This beats having to try to touch the tick or find some way to kill them. They don't have the leg strength to get free from the tape.

Here's a fun experiment. Put your hand behind a tick that is walking around. The style of his work may not appeal to everyone with its muted natural tones and frank realism, nevertheless Melendez deserves to be included on the list of great still life masters.

The Barnes Foundation

One of the great treasures just a mile or so from my present studio in Bala Cynwyd is the Barnes Foundation. Soon, amid great controversy, it is scheduled to move to downtown Philadelphia. Such art legends as N.C. Wyeth and Thomas Eakins were members. Now housed in an historic site combining three houses dating from 1822 to 1828, the club's monthly meetings take place in a large room with old plastered walls and a huge fireplace all of which reminds one of an old tavern. The upper floor sports a well lit gallery and studio.

Upon arriving here I had hoped to become a member, however, the train near my house runs such a limited schedule and the other local stations' parking lots are always full making getting into to downtown Philly no small effort. Here is a great opportunity to try out five different kinds of canvas and linen. Check it out at Jerry’s Artarama: http://www.jerrysartarama.com/discount-art-supplies/Canvas-and-Boards/Canvas-Pads/Ultimate-Canvas-Sampler-Pad.htm. This 6” x 8” pad contains two actual canvas pieces of five different brands, including Old Holland linen. One sample is clear primed linen—this holds some interesting possibilities. The product description notes that the samples are labeled on the back, however in the pad I got they were not. The front cover clearly illustrates them so it was easy to mark the backs myself. Let me know if you get them and what your favorite surface is.

Drawing--A Medium for These Times

Compared to all the paraphernelia needed for painting, drawing is a refreshing reminder of how little it takes to do our art. More often than not everything needed to draw is within arm's reach. With whatever paper and writing utensil is at hand, we are set to go. The disadvantage of archival unsoundness of simple materials ironically unshackles us from the burden of trying to create an outcome worthy of paper that will outlive us. And yet, even in its simplicity, drawing provides us the means to wrestle with the big questions of art.

Personality of a Painting

Like people, paintings seem to have their own personalities. Sometimes a successful painting produces a scrappy photograph; conversely, a scrappy painting might look stunning in a photograph. When I post paintings on my website I am always tempted to rate the paintings on a scale from "this looks much better in real life" to "this painting doesn't really look this good!" I don't rate them, this being subjective and all. Of course, paintings that fall toward the right end of this continuum often never make it to the website in the first place.

My urge to add one more piece of information about a painting doesn't stop with their photographs. When hung on the wall, I want to add to the painting's label "View from 18 inches" or "View at 7 feet" and put a piece of masking tape on the floor "Stand Here". Paintings have ideal positions to show their full power. The effect upon my productivity by having a separate space in which to paint has been the most profound benefit. The progress of its interior accoutrements have slowed along with our national economy, so there are no photographs of the inside yet. The building is a 24' x 24' former garage. Three pairs of French doors replace the garage door. With time I will convert the gravel driveway into gardens. Seen through the lush growth of summer, this view has lapsed into the quieter colors of winter. Many of the plants in the bed are dormant or in the greenhouse. I built the garden wall with bottles and mortar. Later, the bottle wall will be topped with flat river rocks. So, after many years of waiting the studio now awaits.

Adjusting Intensities When Painting With Oils

Of the three properties of color, value, hue, and, intensity, intensity is the least understood. It is often confused with value. That, though, is another discussion. Here I will address my personal approach to adjusting intensity, both up (increased saturation and brilliance of color) and down (decreased saturation and chroma). Consider yellow ochre: it's intensity is easily raised by adding cadmium yellow and lowered by adding almost anything else. Well, right there is the secret of lowering intensity. It is accomplished when almost any pigment, other than a brighter version of its same hue family, is mixed with it. This fact explains the abundance of muddy and chalky (and unsuccessful!) paintings we all have as we set off on our painting journey.

Back to the issue at hand. How I lower intensity depends on what I am after. I might lower the intensity of cadmium yellow, for instance, with burnt sienna where I want a warm darker lower intensity, with dioxazine purple where I want to preserve yellowness as much as possible, with white or a white and black mix where I need the yellow to be duller but stay in high value, with black when I don't mind a bit of a green slant, and with miscellaneous neutrals mixed on the palette when I simply wish to subdue the color. Summed up, I lower intensity by adding an analogous but duller pigment, adding the hue's complement, adding white, adding gray, adding black, and by adding neutral mixes.I have experimented with premixing neutrals. This can be exciting to explore. Empty tubes can be purchased though expensive, or toothpaste tubes repurposed. Somehow, though, I end up using the same trusty cast of characters on my palette and then go from there.

In my book "The Painter's Notebook" that is not available anywhere, there is an excellent and thorough discussion of intensity.
